Beans are a resourceful food and versatile way to make a nutritious meal, but not many local people know how to cook it! You can soak it ahead of time or add an extra hour for cooking time will work fine.

Ingredients

  • (1) 16oz bag pinto beans ✅
  • 1/2 med onion (chopped) ✅
  • 4 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 6oz ham shank
  • 5 cups ofwater
  • salt to taste

Directions

  1. Wash well and sort out any dried beans or rocks.
  2. Chop onion and mince garlic.
  3. In a pot, add beans, onion, garlic, and ham. Cover with 5 cups of water.
  4. Let it cook for 2.5-3 hours. Add water as needed.
  5. Season with salt to taste.
  6. Serve with WIC approved brown rice or whole wheat tortillas!
